What styles of guitar do you teach?
We currently focus on teaching guitar styles that the majority of kids love, including rock guitar, pop guitar, blues guitar, with a focus on fundamentals like chords, strumming, picking, and learning their favorite songs.
In the future, we plan to offer classical guitar lessons as well, so if that is your preference please send us a message and let us know!
How qualified are your guitar instructors?
Our guitar and music instructors bring years of professional performance and teaching experience to your lessons. Our founder, Phoenix, has studied at Berklee College of Music and has years of professional performance experience, and our other instructors come from a similar pedigree, with degrees in music from colleges like UT Austin and University of North Texas, with a wide range of teaching and performing experience.
What will I learn from guitar lessons at the Academy?
Beginner guitar students can expect to work on chords, simple songs and melodies, and theory. Our instructors balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson presents a new technical challenges or theory concept, and ends with something fun, such as your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of guitar methods and techniques, and encourage students to bring their smartphone or CDs to their lesson to learn their favorite tunes.
Do I need to purchase a guitar to learn the instrument?
You are welcome to take your 1st lesson using one of our guitars to make sure we can help you choose the right size and model of guitar for your child. It is definitely important to purchase an instrument so students can practice at home, and we can offer guidance on that process with enrollment in our program. It is possible to acquire an instrument at a very reasonable and affordable cost, but it is also very important to make sure you purchase the right instrument for your child. As a basic guide, most students from 8-12 years of age will require a ¾ size guitar. Many will want to use a guitar with nylon strings as they are easier on the fingers, and typically classical guitars are the only guitars to come with nylon strings installed.
Our program started with a focus on Ukulele, for the very reason that the majority of our students are in the 6-12 age range, and we found that 6-12 months of Ukulele lessons provide a great foundation of confidence and help students to build the finger strength necessary to feel successful on guitar. For students under 8 years old, we encourage them to participate in Ukulele or Piano lessons as a foundation, however Guitar lessons are not available for kids under age 8 at this time. We want to make sure every child enrolled experiences huge progress within 6-12 months, and for younger children, taking lessons on Ukulele or Piano will be more suitable for this purpose. One benefit of enrolling with us is that you will receive priority scheduling when they do come of age and are ready to transition to guitar lessons!
